Blackheath High School Welcomed Celebrity Writer and Presenter to Judge their Public Speaking Competition

Hardeep Singh Kohli ‘blown away by calibre’ of public speaking talent displayed by Blackheath High School Students

Students at Blackheath High School were entertained by Hardeep Singh Kohli, renowned writer, comedian and radio and television presenter, visited their school to judge their annual ‘Greenman Public Speaking Competition’ on Tuesday.  All girls from years 6 to 13 enter the competition and Mr Singh Kohli judged the final round.  The students gave speeches on a range of topics and he was clearly very impressed with their efforts, commenting that he was ”blown away by the calibre displayed, even from the youngest  11 year old girls.  It is an honour to be here and I would gladly hire you all as writers! ”

Announcing Sarah Oladele, aged 15, as the overall winner for her speech on ‘‘If you couldn’t kill it yourself, you shouldn’t eat it’, he said “you were totally charming and compelling with very confident delivery.  I felt I knew you after just a few minutes and that is a very difficult thing to achieve with an audience.”  Shauna Clark Fitzpatrick was awarded the Lower School Prize and Head Girl Buffy Eldridge-Thomas was the Upper School winner.

Hardeep was an inspiring and most engaging judge and gave each of the finalists valuable feedback on their content and delivery, adding that all of the speakers were ‘excellent and articulate.’  The school’s theatre erupted into laughter as he entertained the students with his opinions and comedy anecdotes.

Blackheath High School has an excellent reputation for Public Speaking and Debating with the students taking part in national competitions, including ‘Debating Matters’ and the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition, each year.
