Summer Activities at the Wetlands Centre

Days Out

Summer Activities at the Wetlands Centre

Bats, beetles and scorpions are exciting reasons for a visit to Wildfowl & Wetlands Centre in Barnes this summer. There is plenty to keep both young and school-aged children entertained particularly in the rain with an outdoor play area, the Pond Zone, new Asian short-clawed otters, and regular guided tours.

Rainy Day Activities

Pond dipping sessions are available for those curious about the pond-creatures lurking below the surface. Their nets will be filled to the brim with snails and underwater scorpions! The area is covered, allowing for a perfect way to keep the outdoor fun going. A virtual pond is featured in the wetlands’ Pond Zone area, where children can play with virtual dragonflies and explore water-based features and animals without getting wet.

School Children

School-aged children will be fascinated by Down the Plunge Hole, an interactive exhibit illustrating where water goes from London’s sinks and toilets to the sewers (including  full-size, walk through sewer pipe).  In the Pond Zone, located within the Discovery Centre, children can utilise an underwater camera to search the depths of the wetland.

Wetlands Outdoor Fun

The Wetlands’ newly hatched chicks and ducklings are around throughout the summer, which will be sure to captivate toddlers. This spring the centre also became home to a family of Asian short-clawed otters. Children will be keen to watch these cheeky characters chase each other through the water, enjoy their lunch, or laze about on rocks.

School Children

The outdoor play area at the wetlands, called Explore, features a zip wire, a water play area, child’s climbing wall and over-sized water vole tunnels for young explorers. Walks to learn about the bats that live at the wetlands are conducted once a week and provide a night-time experience of the wetlands.

Guided tours are available everyday at 11.30am and 2.30pm with bird feeding at 3pm. Admission for adults is £10.99, children 4-16, £6.10, with children under 4 free. Summer opening times are from 9:30am-6pm, with last admissions at 5pm. The London Wetlands Centre is located off of A306 and is accessible by both tube (Hammersmith) and rail (Barnes and Barnes Bridge). There is a café and gift shop on site, as well as picnicking facilities. www.wwt.org.uk/visit-us/london/
