Trailblazers in children's furniture design

For 10 years The Children's Furniture Company has designed and manufactured a range of bedroom furniture that has refined qualities at practical prices.

I first saw the Children's Furniture Company at the London Baby Show in 2001.  We were fellow exhibitors.  Founders, Sarah and Charles Codrington were pioneers of internet only retailing, selling a bespoke range of bedroom furniture specifically designed for babies and children.  Although the internet was accessed through a dial-up modem, their website was a shining example of how to embrace the future of online retailing.

Without the need for expensive premises, Sarah focused her attention on sourcing the best quality woods and finishes, with Charles using his skills as a furniture maker, to design pieces that combine quality and longevity.  The result has been a winning formula and is clearly expressed on their fresh and easy to use website.

Fashions for children's rooms has also evolved, and the company offers 9 different styles of furniture including a new playful Jango range with whitewashed wood alongside panelled headboards (from £275), as well as the solid beech Ludo (from £550), and classic Victorian metal beds straight out of the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks (from £299).  The range is extensive, from bunkbeds, to under bed truckles, wardrobes and side tables.  I'm sure their children's desks lure the most reluctant child to settle down with homework.

The company has managed to evolve and grow despite supermarket chains and other high street stores releasing ranges of their own.  They are also using their expertise in design, production and marketing to mentor new furniture designers to get their products to market, and Sarah is a regular at the Mumtrepreneur coffee mornings in Wimbledon.

"Parents looking for children's furniture will do a huge amount of online research, but when they speak to us they can breathe a sigh of relief that their order is being personally handled, with issues such as delivery and assembly all part of the customer service experience we like to give."
