Natural History Museum

Cromwell Road, South Kensington, London

This popular museum has been loved by generations, thought it's best suited to children who are fascinated by dinosaurs and older children who enjoy the study of nature rather than those expecting to see lots of cute animals (most appear here as bones or pinned up behind glass).  The dinosuar exhibitions (special events are paid for but the rest are free) are wonderful but do expect to queue to go round unless you get there very early.  For older children (over 7s) The Cocoon is a state-of-the-art interactive space where you can even see the Museum's scientists at work.  There are free explorer back-packs for under-7s, and if you bring your own picnic you can eat it on the lawns outside or in the basement family area.  Children aged 8-11 can be booked onto sleepover "Dino Snores" (£45).  Cafe/restaurant, nappy changing and shop.  Open Mon-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 11am-5.50pm.  Admission is free.

We strongly recommend you ring Natural History Museum before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Natural History Museum, www.nhm.ac.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Natural History Museum hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
