If you have children under 18yrs who love books, we recommend The Guardians children’s book site. Launched on World Book Day in 2011, it was designed by children, for children.
One hundred children and teens from around the world helped create and edit the website. Children can read reviews, participate in discussions and watch interviews and readings with and by authors of their favourite books.
The site contains three reading zones aimed at different age groups: 7yrs and under, 8-12yrs and 13yrs+. The site also includes, a monthly podcast, a book club, extracts, quizzes, competitions and prizes.
The maini element of the website is child-to-child sharing. Older children are encouraged to discuss their favourite books and prominent authors contribute to engage younger readers. Claire Armitstead, Guardian books editor, notes that it's "astonishing that child-to-child reading gets so little attention. In a culture with many different models of what family means, the resource of other children becomes even more valuable.”
