Winnie’s Dinosaur Day

By Valerie Thomas and Korky PaulReading Zone October 2012

Published by Oxford University Press
ISBN 978-0192794017

£10.99

With her colourful, stripy socks, pointy shoes and bent hat, Winnie has become one of the most recognisable witches around today. And not forgetting her put-upon cat, Wilbur.

In this story, Winnie and Wilbur visit the museum, which looks remarkably like the Natural History Museum in London and which also house bugs, beetles and other creepy crawlies – and dinosaurs!

When Winnie spots a competition to make or draw a dinosaur, she decides to head back in time to find out exactly what the dinosaurs looked like. All is going fine, until Winnie decides to bring back a very hungry triceratops with her!

After it’s eaten half her garden, Winnie manages to find a spell that solves all their problems, saves the rest of her trees and gets Wilbur a new playmate.

Ratburger

By David WalliamsReading Zone October 2012

Published by HarperCollins
ISBN  9780007453528

£12.99

This story by comedian and actor David Walliams has a vile villain, some terrible teachers, a dead hamster and a dare-devil rat so expect lots of danger, some near disasters and many thrills!

Zoe isn’t having a great time. She lives on the 37th floor of a council flat, she is bullied, her dad is always in the pub and she has the worst step mum in the world who spends all the family’s money on prawn-flavoured crisps. Then Zoe’s hamster dies.

It’s only when a new pet comes along, a baby rat, that things start to look a little brighter but then the rat, called Armitage, is stolen by an evil rat catcher. When the rat-catcher threatens to turn Armitage into a burger, so begins Zoe’s fight back which involves a secret warehouse full of rats, a burger machine, lots of rubbish and some squished people.

There are plenty of twists and turns in this story, and more flavours of icecream than you’ve had hot dinners! David Walliams’ stories are brilliantly illustrated by Tony Ross.
