Family Films for the Festive Season

Find out what's on at your local cinema this Christmas.

This year, there are a number of brand new movies being released just in time for the Christmas holidays. We suggest wrapping up the family and taking an outing to your nearest cinema for an afternoon treat. Grab a bucket of popcorn and your favourite pick ‘n’ mix while you settle down to some of the Christmassy offerings Hollywood has in store for us this year.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

(PG) released

Spielberg’s latest offering is a motion-capture animated adventure based on Hergé’s famed comic books, with Jamie Bell voicing Tintin. When the boy reporter buys a model ship called The Unicorn at a flea market, he finds himself pursued by a group of crooks intent on reclaiming the treasure map concealed in the ship’s mast. A worldwide treasure hunt duly follows, involving Captain Haddock, Thompson &Thomson, and the ever-loveable Snowy the dog.

A stellar British cast deliver the voice-over work to this festive flick, which attempts to answer the age old question: exactly how does Father Christmas manage to deliver everyone’s presents in just one night? This animated family comedy has the classic Christmas elements at its heart, and is certain to leave everyone feeling lovely and warm inside.

Legend of the Millennium Dragon

A boy travels 1200 years back in time so he can end the war between humans and demons and fulfill his destiny. Filled with magical creatures and astonishing animation, children are sure to be swept up in this anime fantasy film.

Hugo is a 3D adventure-filled drama directed by Michael Scorsese, which tells the story of an orphaned French boy who lives secretly inside a train station wall in 1930s Paris. When he meets a strange young girl and a cold toyshop owner, Hugo is caught up in a mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy.

Three bird watchers compete to spot the most prestigious birds in an annual American event. Starring Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and Jack Black, this is an amusing tale of three men trying to follow their dreams.

The tap-dancing penguins are back in a loveable sequel to the Academy Award-winning original movie. Join Mumble (Elijah Wood), Gloria (Alecia Moore {Pink}) and their new son, Erik, as they dance their way through new dangers that are threatening the Emperor Penguin world.

The flamboyant feline from the Shrek films made such an impact that he’s been given his own spin-off. Puss in Boots tells the story of how the sword-fighting cat came to meet Shrek and his friends. Weaving together many familiar fairy story characters and plotlines, including Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill, this film is a fun adventure for all the family.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

The Chipmunk crew are busy enjoying a cruise liner vacation until they are ‘chipwrecked’ on a deserted island. Their attempts to make it home are complicated when they discover the island is not that deserted after all...
